Resume Tips for Internship

This post is on a request made by my friend. It will give some basic insight on what you need in a resume for an internship profile.

1) Why company needs an intern? Companies need interns for two purposes: Give an insight about their firm so that you can come back and join them based on your liking, train you in a particular field, reduce the work load on the employees.

2) What are they looking at? For a job profile they look for dynamism, professionalism in prior work, leadership. But for an intern profile they look for some kind of specialization/liking in the field you applying for, good academic and extra curricular records.

3) What all you need to show? You have to show your academic qualifications, prior internship/work ex, projects/conference publications you have, extra courses you took matching the profile, position of responsibilities you hold and the achievements.

4) Some Tips

a) Do write a 2 liner objective of your internship at the top. Make it general because you never know for what role is the company looking at your resume.

b) If you have 2-3 items in one bucket, show the item matching the profile at the top even if other items are more weighted by you so as to seek their attention.

c) Use tabular format only where information has to be passed and no attention seeking is required. Attention seeking items have to written in a separate line.
